To answer this question, scientists from China recently completed a study published in Biology and Medicine looking at the effects of 24 weeks of drinking high-concentration hydrogen-rich water on human health.
In their study, the researchers recruited 48 individuals between 18 and 70 years old to participate in the trial. These participants were randomly assigned to receive either 600 ml per day of high-concentration H2 water or regular tap water over a period of 24 weeks. The results showed that after 24 weeks, those who drank H2 water had decreased levels of oxidative stress markers compared to those who drank regular tap water. Specifically, they showed lower levels of F2 isoprostane (a marker for lipid oxidation), advanced glycation end products (AGEs), malondialdehyde (MDA) as well as increased antioxidant enzyme activity such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH).
What Does This Mean?
The results suggest that long-term consumption of H2 water could be beneficial for reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in the body over time. Oxidative damage caused by free radicals can lead to chronic diseases including cancer, diabetes, heart disease and neurological disorders among others.
